On and off ice training

Off ice training is just as important component of ice hockey as on ice training. Training with me includes strengthening & conditioning, agility & plyometrics, flexibility & mobility, coordination and balancing.

If you ask anyone in Finland what they are the good at, the answer is always ice hockey. We live and breathe for ice hockey. We all learn how to skate and play ice hockey at school. When our national team plays in the World’s Championships, we identify with the team so much that it feels as if we were all on the ice playing.

I was a highly competitive figure skater for 15 years in Finland, spending 20+ hours weekly training in and outside of the ice rink. My team won several gold, silver and bronze medals around the world, including a silver medal in the Junior World Championships.

I grew up training figure skating 6 days a week but watching more ice hockey games than figure skating competitions.

When I started my coaching in Melbourne, Australia, the rink owner asked me if I could run few power skating classes for the ice hockey players. To be honest, I had never even heard of power skating. I said yes out of half excitement, half panic, went home and spent all night studying what power skating is. The next day after my first ever power skating class I was madly in love.

Since then I have coached hundreds of hours of power skating classes and private lessons for all levels from youth skaters to AIHL players, helping them to improve their power and speed on the ice. I’m a firm believer that good skating fundamentals and body control and awareness are crucial for a successful hockey player.

My on-ice coaching focuses on teaching excellent skating skills and technique in very detailed matter which helps the players to be more effective and efficient on the ice. I never thought I’d be as passionate about edge work and body awareness & control as I have become; I’m constantly aiming to find new ways to challenge my students, to keep them on their toes, and it’s been amazing to see how much these athletes have improved under my guidance. Everyday I am so grateful for being able to share my knowledge and passion with players who want to take their training to the next level.
